Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries takes you on a Nordic adventure through Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as you travel to the great northern cities of Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki and Stockholm. Visit Norway's beautiful fjords and the magnificent mountain scenery on the Rauma Railway. Breathe in the salt air of the busy Swedish ports on the Baltic Sea.. Ride through the Danish countryside where Vikings once walked. Hop on the Finnish railway and travel across the Arctic Circle to the land of the Midnight Sun.
Players collect cards of various types of train cars that enable them to claim railway routes and pass through tunnels and onto ferries, as they connect cities throughout the Nordic Countries. Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries is designed specifically for 2 or 3 players. As with previous versions, the game remains elegant, can be learned in 5 minutes and provides hours of fun for families and experienced gamers alike. Hop on board!
This is a special-edition English-language version, driven by customer demand for this game, which was previously only available in Scandinavia. A limited number of copies are being printed.
I have Ticket to Ride: Europe, as well as the Switzerland expansion, the Dice Expansion and the Card Game. In some ways, it does feel like the Nordic Countries should have just been another expansion. But...
The arctic-themed train cards are beautiful. The new colors of plastic player cars are beautiful. Everything about the game is thematic and perfect, and some of that would have been lost in an expansion. But...
The price is too high for an version of TTR that only supports three players instead of the more common five, and it really is a lot of shelf space for a game that could have easily been as compact as the Switzerland version.
I have Nordic Countries, and I'm glad I do. I recommend the game wholeheartedly, but I also recommend that Days of Wonder drops the price a bit.
Our family loves Ticket to Ride in its many forms (original, 1910, Europe, Marklin, Switzerland), so this one was a given. We had to buy it. And the game is good, for certain, but it's overpriced. I imagine that Days of Wonder might justify this as a standalone set for couples or folks with one kid. That's fine. But I have to believe that most people purchasing the game are already familiar with the Ticket to Ride line of games and are just interested in the new board. That's us, at least.
So it's a tad disappointing that I had to pay so much for what amounts to a new board. Even the rules are only barely different from either the original game or the Switzerland expansion (there are ferries and tunnels, both, in this one, so you can grab locomotives as regular cards). This should have been packaged like the Switzerland expansion, with a new board and cards only. I'd even prefer that for how it'd fit on my shelves.
Thanks, DoW, for making this available to gamers in the US. But no thanks for charging so much for redundant pieces.
