Product Description

PÜNCT is the final game of Project GIPF, a series of games that, as you probably know, was announced to consist of 6 games and a number of sets with additional pieces. GIPF, the central game of the Project, was initially released in Belgium in 1997. Now, 8 years later, the series is complete.

PÜNCT is a connection game: the goal is to link two opposite sites. On your turn, you either bring a new piece into play, or you move a piece that is already on the board. The more pieces you bring into play, the more possibilities you have to make a connection. But each time you put a new piece on the board, you reveal a bit of what your plan is. The trick is to place your pieces in such a way that your opponent will expect you to do something different from what you really have in mind. As such, PÜNCT is not only about making a connection, but also about misleading your opponent! You'll have to proceed subtly!

Punct is da bomb!
January 18, 2006
I can't say enough about this game. When it was first announced I was perplexed, reading the pre-release rules on the internet. In the Gipf series ZERTZ and PUNCT have the most difficult rules and ZERTZ had a high learning curve for me. But once I had obtained a copy of PUNCT and played around with it the game mechanics came to me in a flash. I was playing it solitaire, considering myself the black pieces, and lo! and behold, I defeated myself. The game seems, at first, as a simple connection game, but because the pieces move, rotate and stack the range of strategies increase. Trying to connect two opposite sides of the board by laying out the pieces in logical order will be a losing strategy. The trick is to place the pieces where they can me moved in at the right time and bring the victory conditions together all at once.

Counter strategy is also interesting. You must decide not only where to block but how, if a stack is involved you must decide which pieces will change elevation and how.

A wonderful game, with an fresh looking board and aesthetically pleasing gaming pieces. It is satisfying to see the project complete. Now we await the final set of potentials.

Excellent Abstract Game
November 28, 2005
One of the best recent abstract games, and perhaps the best of the Gipf Project series. A challenging 3 dimensional game of connection, blocking, and bluff. If you've enjoyed other games in the Gipf Project series, this one is a must have, and may quickly become your favorite. If you've never played a Gipf Project game, this is a great place to start. And if you're experience with abstract games ends with traditional (in fact ancient) games like Go or Chess, this game will give you a good sense of the current state of the art.

Note: The otherwise excellent rules have one ambiguity (in English translation): for "on one of your own pieces" read "over one of your own pieces" (i.e., always read the board from above, ignoring gaps in the vertical dimension).
